Teaching about Curricula Vitae in Career Ed Helps Students Health & Development

(Identified by ASCD SmartBrief)  A blog post identified by the ASCD Smart Brief service and published by Edutopia suggests that students should be taught to prepare their curricula vitae (which include personal and professional goals) rather then a simple resume (which simply lists assignments and accomplishments). This strategy for Career Education and Student Planning, one which the author calls preparing a "course for life", fits very well with health/personal/social development education, where effective teachers often use student journals and other reflection activities to help students learn more about themselves and their surroundings. As well, linking CV preparation with health journals and reflections is another way to achieve a better integration of health concerns within the core concerns of education systems. The author of the blog post discuses how difficult it can be for students to learn self-reflection techniques. But we all know that this process is essential if students are to develop personal behavioural and life plans. The article then outlines a five phases of preparing a CV, all of which are applicable to HPSD education as well as career education. Read more>>

Youth to Work Transitions & Guidance Counselling

(An item from the ISHN Member information service) An article in Issue #2, 2013 of the Canadian Journal of Counselling & Psychotherapy reviews the literature on youuth to work transitions and then extracts the implications for counsellors. The authors "first discuss today’s hypermodern world, specifically the meanings being conveyed by today’s complex social realities and their impact on individuals’ (work) lives. An overview of research, most of it framed from the perspective of current youth studies literature, follows, addressing how today’s youth think, feel, and act while negotiating work transitions. Finally, some implications for career counselling theory and practice are derived, using some of the most recent developments in the career field theory as an integrative framework."  Read More>>

Well-being & Career Guidance

(An item from the ISHN Member information service) An article in Issue #3, 2013 of the British Journal of Guidance & Counselling explores the connection between career guidance programs and well-being or health. Since many health education curricula are now combined with career education, this focus is worthy of discussion. The authors suggest that "There are both conceptual and empirical reasons to expect that the impacts may be positive, but a lack of evidence directly testing this proposition. Career guidance has commonalities with therapeutic counselling suggesting analogous effects, and it promotes positive engagement in work and learning, which may be associated with health benefits. There are implications for services in reconciling health and employment objectives. However, the promotion of well-being need not imply quasi-clinical ways of working.
