An Overview of the Guide for Developing High-Quality School Emergency Operations Plans

On Thursday, June 27 and Friday, June 28, 2013, the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Safe and Healthy Students and its Readiness and Emergency Management for Schools (REMS) Technical Assistance (TA) Center held a 90-minute webinar to provide an overview of the recently releasedGuide for Developing High-Quality School Emergency Operations Plans.The guide will help schools develop and implement high-quality emergency operations plans (EOPs), and describes the principles and processes that will help ensure planning efforts are aligned with the emergency planning practices at the national, state, and local levels. These webinars were conducted in collaboration with all of the Federal agencies that worked together to develop the guides, and provided an overview of:
  • the key principles for developing a comprehensive EOP for a school;
  • the planning process for developing, implementing, and refining an EOP for a school;
  • the form, function, and content of a school EOP plan; and
  • topics that support emergency operations planning including, but not limited to, information sharing, school climate, active shooter situations, and psychological first aid for schools.

Giving Stronger Consideration to Country and Local Community Contexts in School Health & Social Development: An Initial Discussion from Eastern Europe

UN agencies, government aid agencies and researchers have identified and described the influence that a country's economic, social and environmental capacities and characteristics will have on their respective education, health and other systems and populations. In school health and social development, the contexts of low income countries, high income countries and countries disrupted by wars/conflicts, disasters and epidemics have been articulated and, gradually, bodies of evidence and experience are being articulated. However, the needs, strengths, capacities and important characteristics of middle income countries, which may be re-building or emerging from downturns or from accessing new resources, have not been discussed adequately. This webinar will hear/see presentations from representatives of two such countries in Europe as well as the insights of two experienced leaders working in the school health and community school movements that serve this European region. The session is part of an international dialogue on Contexts and Constraints in school health promotion that includes an international symposium in Pattaya, Thailand on August 23-25, 2013 as well as several webinars organized by regional networks and international discussion groups. Participants will also be asked to comment on a draft Wikipedia style summaries on the influence of country and community contexts as part of the discussion. These include:
